There is so much conflicting advice and misinformation out there!
First: What is the cuticle?

The cuticle = dead skin stuck on your nail plate.
- It’s thin, colorless dead tissue.
- It forms a protective seal between your nail plate and the living skin above it
- Polish will NOT stick to it (that’s why manicures chip at the “cuticle line”).
What the cuticle is not
Most people think the cuticle is the tight band of skin at the base of the nail.
Nope. That’s actually the: Keratinized Proximal Nail Fold (PNF)
- This is living, protective skin.
- It’s your nail’s “guardian seal” over the matrix (where new nail cells form).
- 🙅♀️ Cutting, drilling, or scraping this living skin: weakens that seal, invites irritation and redness, increases hangnails, and boosts your risk of infection. 🙅♀️
How to fix the problem (without cutting anything)
Gently push the PNF back every 4–7 days
Do this with:
- Simply Pure™
- your fingernail
- or the cuticle pusher on the end of our Refillable Squeeze Pens
This breaks the “death grip” connection so the PNF doesn’t get dragged forward.
Keep the area hydrated
A jojoba-based nail oil = hydrated skin, fewer hangnails, calmer cuticle line.
Hydration keeps everything soft and stops the stretching/drying cycle.
